12-year-old charged with murder of cousin, 8

A 12-year-old girl is alleged to have suffocated her cousin following an argument over an iPhone while they were at their grandmother’s house. According to WREG, the unnamed girl, who will turn 13 next week, reportedly used bedding to suffocate eight-year-old Demeria Hollingsworth on Monday. Afterward, she allegedly cleaned up and repositioned the body.

Rayana ‘Rayy’ Smith, Hollingsworth’s mother, expressed her anguish on GoFundMe, saying, ‘I just lost my baby, the most beautiful child of God. The pain I’m feeling is unbearable. I have to now live life without her in this crazy world. I never imagined anything like this would happen and now find myself trying to fund a funeral.’

Police have reviewed a video of the incident, which allegedly shows the 12-year-old suffocating her cousin while she was ‘sleeping in the top bunk,’ according to Frederick Agee, District Attorney of the 28th Judicial District.

Smith explained that the girls were spending the summer with their grandmother in Humboldt, Tennessee, when the tragedy unfolded amid an argument over an iPhone, as reported by WREG.

‘When they told me about that, I should have just gone to get my kid,’ she told the outlet. ‘But they were having fun for the summer, and I didn’t think she would kill my baby. She did nothing to deserve for her life to be taken. She was only eight years old. She just turned eight in April.’
