Baby girl killed in horror car park crash

A heartbroken father has said he has been left “devastated” by the death of his six-month-old daughter, who was killed in a “horror movie” car park crash. Sophia Kelemen tragically died after her pram was struck by a Nissan Qashqai being driven by a family friend on the ground floor of a multi-storey car park in Tenby, Pembrokeshire.

Her father Alex, 27, and mother Betty, 26, were packing their belongings to return to Leigh, Greater Manchester, after a seaside break over the New Year when the tragedy occurred. The baby was rushed to hospital with a broken pelvis and a brain bleed but sadly passed away the following day with her family by her side.

Lorry driver Alex said: “Just before we got to the car, the horror movie started. It’s hard to know and to think about what happened.

“It’s been horrific to see our little daughter being in that bed and go through all those procedures. Everybody loved her, all of our friends.”

Alex explained that the tragedy has been particularly difficult for their five-year-old son, Lucas, who is struggling to understand that he will never see his sister again.

“He’s been asking about his little sister every day since it happened.

“The biggest pain I’ve had was explaining to him that God loved his sister more than we did and God gave Sophia a brand-new set of wings so that she could fly over him and protect him.

“There are things I don’t know how to explain to him. He’s our only son now, and he’s the most important for us.”
