THREE skiers have died after a devastating avalanche tore through a 9,300ft mountain in Italy. The victims were dragged several hundred metres downhill, suffering fatal injuries, according to rescuers.
The disaster occurred around midday in the northern Piedmont region, near Italy’s border with Switzerland. Five skiers were caught in the terrifying avalanche on the eastern face of Punta Valgrande. Two others survived and were airlifted to hospital by helicopter.
Shocked witnesses reported seeing the avalanche crashing down the mountain, sweeping multiple people off the slope.
An alert had been issued in the Piedmont region for areas above 6,900ft, warning of a considerable risk of avalanches.
