A major closure is set to remain in place on the M6 overnight after a dramatic lorry fire caused damage to the carriageway.
Fire crews spent several hours tackling the intense HGV blaze on the northbound carriageway between junction 22 at Winwick and junction 23 for the East Lancs Road during the early hours of Monday morning (14 April).
Both directions of the M6 were initially shut as thick plumes of smoke drifted across the motorway, before the southbound carriageway was later reopened.
An update posted on Monday evening stated: “The M6 northbound is now closed between J21A (M62) J23 (Haydock) for emergency resurfacing following an earlier vehicle fire.”
